Cap the Ike

Pave Oak Park, a proposal commissioned in response to the ridiculous Cap the Ike study and "grassroots initiative," assesses the feasibility of paving over a large portion of Oak Park in order to add several additional lanes of traffic to the Eisenhower Expressway between Harlem Avenue and Austin Boulevard.  Currently, the traffic constipation that occurs as the "Ike" passes through Oak Park creates a physical and psychological barrier between the suburbs to the west of Oak Park and the City of Chicago to the east.

This website, which has no relationship whatsoever to the entities whose names and logos appear below, is intended to enlighten the public about the benefits of paving Oak Park. A map illustrating the Pave Oak Park project is available here, and an illustration of the new lane configurations and resulting effects on vehicular traffic flow is available here.

The Eisenhower Expressway, Interstate Highway 290, runs from the Loop in downtown Chicago to the western suburbs of Chicago. It opened in 1954 as Congress Parkway, and was part of I-90. The "Ike" passes through the towns of Oak Park, Forest Park, Maywood, Bellwood, Westchester, Hillside, Berkeley, and Addison. It intersects with the Dan Ryan Expressway, the Tri-State Tollway, and the Reagan Tollway. A Chicago Transit Authority train line runs through its median for several miles.
